Preserving your Mental Health during COVID-19

Are you having difficulties preserving your mental health across the COVID-19 pandemic?

“Amid uncertainties, the best medicine is self-care”.

Here are 9 things you can do to preserve your mental health.

  1. Avoid feeling isolated and learn to manage regulate your emotions.

  2. Your anxiety won't fix anything.

  3. To decrease your level of anxiety and depressive states, make sure to reach out to friends, family, and community.

  4. Use technology to reach out to people.

  5. Get away from technology when you start feeling overloaded by the pandemic vibe.

  6. While maintaining social distancing, go for a walk, seek places that are not populated and enjoy spending time with yourself.

  7. What about walking your dog as a mindful practice?  If you can leave the house of course.

  8. Seek open spaces in nature. Practice mindfulness through bird watching and directing your attention to their call and response.

  9. I suggest to intentionally take in the sunlight and spend some time practicing positive visualization.

All of this can be done!

Challenges and Opportunities:

If you are unable to step out of the house (seniors), you can practice visualization indoors. Meditation is free and it doesn't require a device or an app. We are mostly equipped with this technology of being mindful.  All you need to do is start using the potential that you already have and are!

If mindfulness is a new concept for you, start small and simple. For instance, practice mindfulness, washing your hands. Feel the texture of the soap, the shape of your hand, the sound of water running, the water caressing your skin! This will help you feel more grounded and present.

“Be a carrier of compassion and generosity”.

In times of uncertainty, being grateful is the best medicine. It actually boosts the immune system!

“Be creative and grateful for what you have”.

Overall practice an attitude of compassion within yourself and with the people that you are sharing space with.

Remember that we are in this together.

Best to all of us and remember "this too shall pass".
